Heavy Voter Turnout in Presidential Election

A record number of early voters registered in this year’s presidential election. In Louisiana, nearly a quarter of a million people registered as early voters. There were lines at voting polls across the state for the first time in many years.

Among those lines were many young voters, a group that has not been very active in past elections. Election commissioners in East Baton Rouge Parish say this election day was like nothing they have ever seen. So what is so different about this year’s presidential election?

Bob Mann, Political Historian and Political Communication Professor at Louisiana State University says the Obama Campaign utilized technology that had never been used in previous campaigns to reach young people, and that helped drive them to the voting polls on election day.

Margaret Gremillion, an election commissioner at a poll in East Baton Rouge says this is the first time she’s seen such a heavy turnout, especially among young voters, in the ten years she has commissioned.
